Work Songs

The topic for today is still on slavery. We've been taught that the slaves were forced to work to pick tobacco and cotton. They were working hard even though the sun is burning their skin. They've got nothing to do but to work hard cause someone's watching over them and will hit them if they are being sluggish. For them to be alive while working, they sing songs called work songs. They convey they feel that time through work song.

We are asked some questions and these are:

Explain the feeling that you get when you listen to these songs?
-I feel pity for them. I can feel the pain when they sing. That they can't do anything to get their own freedom. The pity that makes me want to help them to ease their pain but I know I can't. The unity to make a beautifully harmonized voices is so smooth to hear but the agony is still there.

What kind of information about slavery did you learn from these songs?
-The information that I learn about slavery from these songs is that they are really longing to get back to their home, that they want to come back to where they belong and that the hope still remains in their hearts despite the cruel treatment of life to them. Slavery never did well for everyone. Slavery wasn't welcome to the life of people but still won to trap them and chained them until they suffer to death.

What can you relate to in any of these songs?
-Unlike them, I own myself and I'm responsible for taking care of it. The song 'Sweet Chariot' really captured my heart and it goes inside me. The feeling of yearning to come back home is matching with my feeling. I understand how sore it is when you want to go home but you can't. Endurance is such an important thing for this. Without endurance, the pain will continue to stab you and will make you weak.

What do you think the slaves are talking about in these songs?
-The life of being a slave. The hardship going through the ruthless hand of white people. The misery that they experienced and the greedy life that takes all their rights of living.

Here you can listen to the song 'Sweet Chariot"
