Tomorrow When The War Began pt.5

Chapter 5-6

Tomorrow, When The War Began: Chapter Five
Must Do Questions:
What does Corrie’s choice in career say about her character?
-She is so outgoing and always ready for interesting things. She is passionate about what she wants to do in her life. She organizes her life and future properly according to her passion.
The group’s ability to avoid arguing with each other is rare- do you think that there would have been more drama if you and your friends went bush for a week?
- No, I don’t think there would be been a drama if we went bush for a week. First of all, we have our eldest friend that can manage us all as she is like our mother-sister in the squad. Second, I think all of us is matured enough for dramas and arguments (except for one HAHAHA) and if there are dramas between us, we’ll keep it to ourselves and will not make it a bigger issue because we believe in our friendship not the tension between us. Lastly, everyone in the squad will just don’t let it and we love laughing and giggling to each other.
Why do you think Ellie and Lee feel uneasy just before their return to Wirrawee from the Bush?
- Because both of them are uneasy and seek outside information. They feel something is up and it is bad. They want an answer to those curiosity feeling in their hearts and mind.
What do you predict will await the group back home, why do you think this?
- Ruined town, silent road, and something like the catastrophe.

Tomorrow, When The War Began: Chapter Six
Must Do Questions:
What is the first sign that something is wrong with Ellie’s house?
-Her dogs are dead.
Who is the first person to really realize what is happening?
-It was Lee realizes what is happening. When they came to Ellie’s house, there he is acting more cautiously and he seemed careful to what he is doing.
What is Ellie’s reaction to this person’s caution? Why do you think she reacts this way?
-She told him that he is wrong and he should stop doing things. She reacts this way because she can’t accept the truth that war is happening in their town.
How is the pace in this chapter different from the chapters before?
If you were in this situation, would you test the radio or not? Give reasons for your thinking.
-This chapter contains more suspense and serious atmosphere between the characters and the setting compare to the previous chapters where Ellie can still add some past happenings and joke around.
No, I won’t test the radio. Like the characters in the story, I am scared. I am not scared for myself but I am scared for my family to put in danger if the authorities find out someone is still alive in the town.
Do you think the way the teenagers reacted to the realisation that Australia may have been invaded or at war was realistic? Why/why not?
-For me, it’s not, because if it is really war why don’t the invaders completely intrude the whole place? They don’t have to leave that place and wait for someone to come there before they attack.

Can birds really use Earth's magnetic fields to navigate?

According to the article 'How birds use Earth's magnetic field to navigate by Peter Meredith' in the website Australian Geographic (check it out!), there scientists sort out things to prove and give details about what and how birds use magnetic fields to navigate.

Facts I found out:
-Migratory birds can't tell that what their heading is either south or north, what they just look for is just it's 'equator-wards'.
Something I found interesting and surprising:
- These birds have this protein in their retina that creates a chemical reaction into the  Earth's magnetic field and this way they use it as their compass.
A question I am pondering:
- I wonder if other kinds of birds can also use Earth's magnetic field as their navigator( because it says there in the article that only 20 species can only use those)

Tomorrow When The War Began pt.4

Chapter 4

Tomorrow, When The War Began: Chapter Four
Must Do Questions:
Do you think the way they handled the snake incident was appropriate? What could they have done differently?
- It is either yes or no. I will say yes since nothing bad happened to them and the snake didn’t bit any of them so it was a relief. But I will say no because what they did is wrong and if the chances are different, someone could have bitten by the snake. What they did wrong is that they all waited for the snake to come out and they even are around the sleeping bag which will make the snake have no choice to escape but to bite one of them to get out. Since they ran fast before the snake could bite them, it was a relief.

Ellie claims that ‘Hell’ is only a label and that people label things all the time, often ignoring or overlooking certain labeled places or things. She then comes to the conclusion that ‘Hell was people’. Is she right? What’s your opinion, on labeling and Hell?
-Yes, she was right. She’s right the Hell was just label. People do label things on their perspective but sometimes their perspective opposes the real place or things. Hell was not really a hell. Sometimes they do label things according to their feelings or what they see outside.  You see Hell was not literally a hell. In fact, it was a nature that deserves more than that name or label. It is a place that will ease your emotions. It’s a paradise but ironic to its name.

What was especially peculiar about the planes that flew over Hell? ‘Their ------, their ------, their----- frightened me.’ Do these characteristics have any significance?
-These planes just flew so low and there too many of them which are really strange and too uncommon for it to visit in Wirrawee. Yes, it has significance. The fact that these planes occurred when it is night time where people are in their lovely sleep created a big impact.

The way that Ellie described those planes builds some ideas in the readers that it was something dangerous. And what’s more questionable is why in the Commemoration Day? Where people are gathered and enjoying not minding their surroundings?.
Corrie and Kevin are the only couples in the group, but the trip was bound to bring friends closer. So why does Homer’s interest in Fi seem so odd to Ellie?
- It is because Homer doesn’t seem to talk to that kind of things especially he is known for his mischievous actions. Or maybe it can be because of the feelings of Ellie to Homer. Since Ellie feels attracted to Homer, it can cause for her to not believe that the guy he likes, likes another girl when it’s just natural for a man change because of love.

Fi brushes off the planes coming back from Commemoration Day. Why do you think the planes were flying over Wirrawee?
-Because Wirrawee is the most possible target for those planes especially if that planes are for to invade the place. Wirrawee is celebrating an occasion which more likely to make it easier for the intruders to break down the place.

Robyn claims there were dozens and dozens of planes flying over them. What is Lee’s response? Is his suggestion reasonable?
- Lee’s response is it is the start of the World War Three. Well, it can be possible. With those dozens of planes, how can you not think of a war? And as of the detailing of Ellie to those planes, it is not the property of their own country and she can recognize the menacing sense of the bizarre planes.

WORD App Achieved!

Introduction:
Hello everybody! I'm so happy to be back again and tell you my good news about my learnings and progress in DTE. We already finished the app! I know it sounds unbelievable but yes. Our app is not we really expected but we are satisfied with it cause we know that we put our big efforts to it.

Digital Learning Object:
WORD App. Here's our app. Check it and if you can please leave me a feedback and we'll try to improve it as best as we can :).

Reflection:
Actually, this app was not our original plan. We revised or should I say changed completely our first plan. Our first plan was to make an app about chatbots but we altered into something that will make it more simpler but still relatable in our vision. We have lots of ideas like creating a game like kahoot, putting some quotes and positive sayings for them, establishing levels for the game, create background music and etc. And guess what? we struggled again. Suddenly, Mr. Carter saved our falling hope. He improved our ideas into broader and useful for our app. Here's his lecture to what should we do in our app.
Since Mr. Carter's ideas were really really helpful and make a lot more sense, we decided to follow his guide. As you can see in the photo there is a hub in the center(of course, it's a hub!) it is the main idea of this project. Then, in its side which is like a mind map, you will see branches and properties like videos, contacts, positive comments, games and research. Those branches are for the button to click and contents are there. After that, we already have to do the actual app making. With the help of code.org we managed to do it. It was sincerely hard. Not only because we are just a beginner but it was also a challenge. There are things that we cannot do in the app lab section of the code.org. We need to put some links to the buttons for people to let click and get through the videos or games but the app lab didn't allow us.

For your information, Mr. Carter made us choose our group. It was a benefit for me cause I've got to experience to bond with people that I haven't know. Ofa, Wardah and Devie were my groupmates. I did the coding and some research, Ofa did most of the research, Devie and Wardah tried the applab and informed me what things can I do in the applab. If you read my blog posts last time about our planning session, I mentioned there how happy I am when I'm grouped with them. And today I'm going to remark it again, I am so lucky to have them on my team. As their leader, I can say that we did a great job aside from the fact that our app is not that really successful in terms of content and design. But what's more important is that I experience how to struggle and how to look forward instead of being drowned in the difficulties we did. I exerted so much effort in this activity and finishing it is an accomplishment for me. Thanks to my groupmates. Yes, I admit that they are not the ideal groupmates and I'm not the perfect leader but we clicked. I always make sure that they are not suffering a lot and I tried to make them smile and laugh even though when I know to myself that I'm not in the mood to crack jokes.

Overall, my experience in this work was tough and worth it. Our app is not perfect. It has many flaws. We accepted this truth because we are just starting off especially, we struggled to make this app. There's so much stuff happened before we managed to achieve at least the best that we can put off. What's important to me is that we succeeded in making it and we had fun while the group is doing it.

Feedbacks from other students who checked our app:

Lila Hughes (10 Tn)
"It was an amazing app but there are errors that I've seen. I've checked one video that says "6 ways to cure depression" but then it doesn't really tell me how to CURE depression. And also the games, if your app wants to help people that are depressed why don't you added some really helpful interactive apps like how to breathe properly and etc."

Lenora Taotua Lavea ( 10 Hy)
"That was good, that will get people to try and help themselves throughout there sufferings. It was good for you or your group added many ways that could help others get through depression."

Evaluating our Performance in Music

Last week 6 we had our performance for the term 2. For about 5 weeks which we have 2 music periods per week, we exerted effort and those 5 five weeks ( about 8 periods of music, just 8 because sometimes something came up and we didn't have our music) served as our practice periods and preparation.

Mrs. Beer made us some questions to evaluate ourselves about our performance. Below are the questions and my feedback:

Our song piece: Take it eas by Stan Walker

  • Were you happy with your performance? Why? '
- Yes. It was not a perfect performance actually. I was happy because our hard work paid off and unity which was our weapon as a group worked!
  • How did you feel performing in front of an audience? Explain.
-It has always nerve-wracking. There are no performances in my life that I felt comfortable for the first time. But as long as I keep playing and singing, I just go with it and give my best performance.
  • What was your final grade and were you happy with it?
-Of course. Who doesn't want excellent in their grade?. After all the nervousness that I felt, the voice cracks that I committed when we are practicing are just worth it. The joy that my classmates gave us after we finished performing is such an overwhelming feeling.
  • How could you have improved your performance?
-When we performed, I did a mistake while playing the piano. If I were given a chance, I would give attention to my hands playing the piano. But overall, it was awesome!

Tomorrow When The War Began pt.3

I finished the chapter three guys! Here's the task for this chapter:

Tomorrow, When The War Began: Chapter Three
Must Do Questions:
Why does Robyn think they are the only people ever to have gone into Hell?
-Robyn thinks that they are the only one people ever to have gone into Hell because that place doesn’t have the spot or any changes that people would do if they discovered a new place. And if the place was already into the Hell it will probably a tourists spot since it is a beautiful place.

Why do you think the valley is called Hell?
-I think that the valley is called because there’s a history which can be compared into Hell but since the time goes by the place is abandoned by people cause it has so many memories and dark incidents occurred there.

Why must the teenagers seem like visitors from hell to the wild things living in the clearing? How is this ironic?
- They seem like visitors from Hell because they feel like Hell is the place that they are used to and they haven’t so it is ironic. She said this line to give knowledge to readers that they are the visitors from Hell and they are yelling out telling the other parts of the place that they came from this astounding creation, Hell. Seems so not understandable but makes sense.

What picture of Kevin do we get in this chapter?
- We get the picture of Kevin where he is so talkative and he feels excited to the thought that their adventure is going to be fun as they found the bridge that’ll lead them to Hell.

What does Ellie liken Fi to? Do you think this is a fair assessment of her character? Use examples from the text to support your thinking
- Ellie likens Fi from being beautiful, elegant, ignorant, graceful, sophisticated, precious, a coconut to the outside world( doesn’t know what’s happening in the outside world), and she is just role model for Ellie. Like from the chapter two, Ellie stated there that everything Fi did is gracefully (page 18 in the book). Also in the first chapter when she is introducing Fi, she uttered there that Fi is a hero for her stating this line, “Fi was always a bit of a hero to me, someone I looked up to as the perfect person. It is a fair assessment to her character because Ellie may not be the traits of Fi have, Ellie makes more impact to the story as she justifies more of details in the story and feels like Fi does just balance the story.

At times Ellie switches her narration from retelling the story to commenting about her life in the present - why do you think the author has chosen to write in this style?
- It is to give details about her background story and to create comparison in things happening in her present times. The author has chosen this style because it made easier to write happenings in the story and it has more sense when things are being compared. It also helps the readers to absorb more details about the life of the characters.

What am I learning?
 - I'm learning about the occurings in the chapter three of Tomorrow When the War Began.
How does this show my learning?
-This shows my learning cause I've done all the task on this chapter.
What am I wondering about?
- I'm wondering about what's the next chapter would be about.

Awesome Hieroglyphics

On our social studies, we learned and still studying about Egyptians. Together with the lesson, we are learning their writing system which is hieroglyphics. Hieroglyphics is the way of the ancient people to communicate using symbols. If in our modern day we have our alphabets and etc, the ancient Egyptians had hieroglyphics.

Using the website Penn Museum, you can inscribe your name using hieroglyphics. It is awesome and fascinating! Go and check now!.

Tomorrow When The War Began pt.2

Chapter Two

Must Do Questions:
How did the group of teenagers ascend Tailors Stitch?
-They ascend Tailor’s Stitch using the Land Rover.
What are the two special events happening the day after the teenagers leave for the bush?
-The Wirrawee Show and the Commemoration Day.
How many days were they planning on staying? How much food do you think is reasonable to bring, split between 7 teenagers?
-Five days. Of course, it should be more than a bag maybe five bags.
Who is the Hermit and what is he supposed to have done?
-Hermit is the rumored murderer man lived in Hell.
Do you think the Hermit will be significant to this story? Why/Why not?
-Yes. There could be a mystery about him living in hell and why did he lived there and maybe he made things in Hell that could help the teenagers.
Are their decent down Satan’s Steps into Hell dangerous? Discuss what are the dangers, how could they have made it safer, what would you have done?
-They could fall and hit anything in their body, they could fall together at the same time if they are not careful, they might go to the other direction and be lost, they could get bruises to the bushes and logs around their way. Well, these things inevitable if it happens but after all this is an adventure so they will really experience stuff.
Predict what the bridge signifies
-The bridge could signify a pathway which will lead them to another place, a mysterious but beautiful place.

Tomorrow When The War Began

Examining the cover

Looking at the original cover to the right, answer the following questions, remember to explain why you think that for each answer:

How do you think this story will be written?
-It will be written in a past tense manner with a point of view of the protagonist because I infer that it is about war.

Why do you think the story is entitled as it is? -It is entitled ‘Tomorrow, When the War Began’ because it will be a story about war and I think
the war is unexpected like it happened tomorrow after their adventure.

Where do you think the story will take place?
-As the author is an Australian so I suppose that it happened in Australia.
What time period do you think the story is set in?
-Kind of in old times in the year 1990’s.

Consider the effect of the following choices-

How is the cover composed? (camera angle/shot type/framing)
-Longshot and transition of a ferris wheel.

How is lighting used? (brightness/mood/contrast)
-It is used not show the characters but to show them in shadow manner.

How is text used? (font/size/language/positioning)
-It is in English title with a 60 or more size font (Times New Roman) and the subheading with 30-40 font size same with the name of the author.

What symbolism is used? (objects/people/setting/colours)
-Sun, ferris wheel gun, fence and three people.
