Chapter 7-8
Tomorrow, When The War Began: Chapter Seven
Must Do Questions:
Which people in the group are starting to stand out as leaders, is this surprising?
-Homer and Robyn. Yes.
Why/why not?
- In the first part of the story, Homer was detailed as a silly man and do dumb and stupid things. He started to lead the group since when they are routing to the Hell so it’s kinda not so shocking to read that the group is following him. Whilst in this chapter, Robyn is absolutely standing out as a leader. At first, you wouldn’t notice it but if you dig a little deeper you can sense her leadership. Robyn is known for her calm and composed personality. It is a burst when I started to realize that she can lead the group.
Do you think that taking Kevin’s dog Flip to Corrie's house was a mistake? Explain your thoughts.
-No. First of all, they didn’t know that someone will going to check the house and afterwards will bomb it. The dog didn’t know that bad people are coming and it just did what he needs to do which is to signal everybody that someone is coming.
What does Lee mean when he says ‘we might have to make some ugly choices?’
-He means that they have to sacrifice something for the sake of everybody and it is the ugly choices they need to make.
How is Ellie’s image of Kevin changing in this chapter?
-Ellie’s image of Kevin changed in this chapter in a manner of more positive characteristics unlike in the previous chapter where she doesn’t like him for Corrie. But in this chapter, she saw the good side of Kevin.
Is the decision to split into smaller groups a wise one? Give reasons
-Yes. Because by splitting by smaller groups they can spread onto the place and observe what’s happening. They can also easily move since there’s not much people in every group. If they get caught, since they can move easily , there won’t be much of injuries while if they all get caught at the same time, it is so simple for the shooters to shoot at them cause they are many.
Why is it that Ellie’s group decides to act ‘illogically’ and survey the Showgrounds together?
-It is because they need to be more careful of the movement they are taking. They need strategies and that strategies should allow the possibilities that the opponents would think if someone is sneaking in the Showground. If they are logical it will be easy for them to get caught and being logic is the easy thing to think but being illogical is hard to predict.
Why does the idea of a female soldier surprise Ellie?
-Because it is unusual to have war and use women to fight .
If your parents were captured in a situation like this, would they have been ‘sensible’, or -
would there have been violence?
-If my parents were captured in a situation like this, I would say that they would fight especially my father. He doesn’t want anyone in his family to get hurt so definitely he will fight them.
How is Ellie ‘transformed’ once she steps out from behind a tree near the Showgrounds?
-Once she steps out from behind the tree near the Showgrounds, she became a courageous woman that there’s no more turning back and the only choice is to fight and go on. She transformed herself in a fiercer and braver pace.
Ellie and Kevin’s quick-thinking allowed them to turn a ride-on lawnmower into a bomb. Was this moral behavior? Did they do the right thing, or should they have surrendered themselves?
-Killing is unacceptable for humankind but this was a matter of life and death situation so I would say that they did the right thing. Why? Because they need to survive. They are surrounded by guns and weapons that can kill them so before their opponents would blink they need to finish them first. It is also not only about survival but also their other friends will need them. If they get caught, it will be harder for everybody in the group to fight especially they are not complete anymore. Everyone is important in this battle.
Predict what you think has happened to Lee and Robyn.
-Since the soldiers already know that there are people left in the town, they will probably search around and look for them. They might get caught.
Tomorrow, When The War Began: Chapter Eight
Must Do Questions:
How does Ellie feel after the lawn mower incident?
- She felt horrible to the point that she can’t accept the fact that she killed somebody that she doesn’t even know worth dying for.
How does she think the others will react to her story when she tells it?
-She expects them to get angry at her and mock on her as Rambo.
How do they actually react? Why?
-They got shocked when they heard about it but they also comforted her and said, Homer, that it’s okay, war is set now so fight for your lives is important.
Homer says, “This is war now, normal rules don’t apply. They’re the ones who tore up the rulebook, not us”” What does this say about his character? What do you think of the validity of his opinions?
- He is furious this time. He doesn’t care about the rules applied now because those are already broken by the invaders. If they fight, we will fight too, is like what his character says. For me his opinion was valid. Once they invaded their town and imprisoned the people and parents of these teenagers, it is already war. Killing is unacceptable yes, but how would you save people you love if you won’t kill? What is a war for if killing not involve? He can’t just wait there and let them reign over their beloved land.
Fi talks about the ‘shadows’, during their reconnaissance. What are these shadows and what are the implications due to their existence?
-These shadows according to Fi’s detailing about it was not soldiers and she also said that she wasn’t really sure about these shadows. Due to these shadows, Fi and Homer need to stop and look at these. Fi mentioned that these shadows ran off when she shouted to them.
What pieces of evidence from the book inform the reader that this invasion wasn’t entirely peaceful? Find at least 3 examples.
- The guns that chased Ellie.
-The ruined town.
-Blood risking.
